SCOIL ASSAIM, BNS, RAHENY, DUBLIN 5

Scoil Assaim Boys National School, which dates from the1950s, is a senior boys’ school in Raheny providing classes from Second to Sixth

Kelly and Cogan Architects were appointed in 2016 by the Board of management of Scoil Assaim to deliver the addition of a new wing accommodating 6 no new classrooms and support and reception facilities.

The school is located on a campus with two junior schools to the South West, playing pitches to the north east and woodland to the North East.

The new wing contains 6 additional classrooms over two levels in an extension to the existing schoolhouse of Scoil Assaim BNS and is located to the front of the existing school of the older 1950s school building in order to form a courtyard open towards All Saints Drive.

It is also adjacent to the main entrance and playground and forms the primary boundary to the north with Watermill Road and the fine stand of Holm Oak trees which survive on that side of the school as a palimpsest of the 18th century parkland of the now vanished St Annes House.

The decision to locate the extension to the front, replacing the existing classrooms at first floor level to the NE block and demolishing some bike sheds will allow the potential for future School Hall development at the back of the older school building.

The design of the new wing allows for the introduction of a new pedestrian entrance gate at the corner of All Saints Drive and Watermill Road opening up to a new access path leading through the adjacent green area to a new main entrance into the building. This will

allow visitors controlled access to the building while at the same time allowing for separation of play areas.

Classrooms have been designed as structured educational space, for children of different ages, capabilities and needs. The calm, quiet environment of which is conducive to fostering each child’s personal growth.

The classrooms are located on the ‘quiet’ side of the wing and are separated from the play area by the main access corridor thereby eliminating noise pollution and distraction.

The design takes advantage of the adjacent Holm Oak plantation by incorporating large windows in the classrooms which overlook the trees and which bring the afforestation into the classroom and minimises sensory overlaid for the children, by: eliminating glare, using muted colours within the classroom spaces while allowing for more vibrant colours to be used to accessorise in the classrooms to provide stimulation.
